Within the realm of creative writing, I expanded my writing genres from fiction and fantasy to that of nonfiction, too. I wanted to strengthen and hone my skills across the various genres and forms of creative writing. This piece is a standalone nonfiction essay based on my own lived experiences. Part of the coursework involved reading and responding to memoir work of three creative nonfiction writers, and as the theme of the memoirs was the environment and nature, it was natural that one of my own written pieces would emulate this theme. This piece is titled “How the Garden Grows” and explores my relationship to nature in the form of the lily plant in my garden.
